AMOLED Displays Overtake LCD in Smartphone Market for First Time

LONDON, United Kingdom—According to Omdia's latest OLED Display Market Tracker, AMOLED displays surpassed TFT LCD shipments in the smartphone market for the first time in 2024.

The global smartphone display market grew 7% year-over-year in 2024, reaching 1.55 billion units in its second consecutive year.

AMOLED display shipments increased 26% to 784 million units, while TFT LCD shipments declined 8% to 761 million.

AMOLED displays now account for 51% of total smartphone display shipments.

Since the second half of 2022, Chinese display manufacturers have significantly reduced the prices of flexible AMOLED panels, prompting smartphone manufacturers to upgrade mid-range devices from rigid AMOLED and LTPS TFT LCD panels.

This trend has continued through 2024, increasing flexible AMOLED's market share from 28% in 2022 to 40% in 2024.

Chinese display makers increased their AMOLED shipments by 45% year over year in 2024, raising their share to 45% of total smartphone display shipments.

This growth was driven by expanding demand from Chinese smartphone manufacturers.

South Korean display makers focused on premium segments, primarily supplying Apple and Samsung with higher-margin products.

According to Brian Huh, Senior Analyst in Omdia's Display research practice, AMOLED display shipments are expected to grow in 2025 due to strong demand from Apple, including the new iPhone SE launch, and ongoing AMOLED adoption by Android manufacturers replacing TFT LCDs.

Chinese display makers are projected to increase their market share through supply chain relationships with local smartphone brands.
