Hyundai, Samsung Pioneer P-5G RedCap Tech for Smart Manufacturing
Seoul, South Korea / Barcelona, Spain - Hyundai Motor Company has completed a pilot project for Private 5G (P-5G) RedCap technology in partnership with Samsung Electronics.
The technology will be showcased at MWC25 Barcelona, scheduled for March 3-6.
Hyundai Motor has become the first in the mobility manufacturing sector to verify P-5G RedCap technology.
Since January 2025, Hyundai Motor has completed testing of Samsung's P-5G solutions, including radio, core, and management systems, with its in-house vehicle inspection equipment at Samsung's Suwon campus.
The P-5G RedCap technology offers simplified device configurations, compact infrastructure, and reduced bandwidth usage.
This results in lower power consumption, cost efficiency, and improved performance over traditional Wi-Fi in speed, data processing, connection stability, and low latency.
Hyundai Motor integrated RedCap, which enabled Qualcomm's Snapdragon X35 5G Modem-RF System chipsets to be integrated into its Diagnostic Scan system for transmitting vehicle inspection data.
Samsung's P-5G solution reduces power consumption and doubles uplink capacity for real-time IoT data transmission.
After establishing a P-5G testbed in Korea in late 2022, Hyundai Motor applied the technology in mass production at its Ulsan plant in October 2024, deploying dozens of automated guided vehicles.
At Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, the company adapted its P-5G to meet local regulations, enabling the operation of over 200 autonomous mobile robots.
The implementation has reduced communication disruptions and downtime.
Hyundai Motor developed a patented dual wireless communication solution that combines 5G networks with Wi-Fi. Since deployment, there has been zero communication-related downtime.
Hyundai Motor plans to integrate P-5G into its new EV-dedicated plant in Ulsan, which will open in 2026. Further expansions are planned for key plants.
