LG Energy Solution partners with Qualcomm on advanced EV battery tech

Seoul, South Korea—LG Energy Solution announced that it has developed a new battery management system (BMS) diagnostic solution that will run on Qualcomm Technologies' Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform

This marks the first implementation of BMS software for high-performance system-on-chip computing.

The South Korean battery maker said the new solution offers 80 times more computing power than conventional BMS systems, enabling enhanced safety diagnostics and more accurate detection of thermal incidents in electric vehicle batteries.

The companies have entered a joint promotion agreement to accelerate the system's commercialization.

This agreement builds on their earlier collaboration, announced this year, to develop next-generation BMS diagnostic solutions.

LG Energy Solution said the new software will integrate with Qualcomm's Car-to-Cloud Connected Services Platform, allowing automakers to utilize the diagnostic solution for human-machine interface and cloud services.

The system can perform real-time diagnostics without requiring a server connection, analyzing vehicle driving information within the vehicle itself.

It also provides enhanced degradation diagnostics, including predicting battery residual capacity and component-specific degradation indicators.

LG Energy Solution, which holds over 8,000 BMS-related patents, reported that its safety diagnostic detection rate exceeds 90% and its degradation diagnostic error rate is approximately 1%.

The announcement follows LG Energy Solution's recent launch of its new brand, B.around, focusing on advanced BMS solutions that incorporate cloud and AI technologies.
