Yahoo Japan Launches AI-Powered News Curation Feature
Tokyo, Japan—LINE Yahoo Corporation announced on Wednesday that it has launched "AI Topi," an artificial intelligence feature that selects essential news stories and generates headlines at regular intervals throughout the day.
The new feature is available on the Yahoo! JAPAN iOS application's news tab.
It provides users with access to what the company describes as "significant trending news topics."
AI Topi utilizes generative artificial intelligence to evaluate and select news articles from content partners.
It adheres to editorial principles that prioritize public interest and social relevance.
The system assesses news using criteria including timeliness, public benefit, and reliability when selecting content and generating headlines.
The curated news section updates approximately every 30 minutes and displays up to 20 articles in a dedicated section at the bottom of the news tab.
According to LINE Yahoo, the system selects news from various categories, including politics, economics, disasters, sports, and entertainment, to offer users a balanced news diet.
More than 50 media organizations, including ABEMA TIMES, FNN Prime Online, Impress Watch, ORICON NEWS, Netlab, and Reuters, have granted content licensing permissions for the feature.
The service is currently only available on iOS devices, although the company plans to expand it to Android and browser versions.
In its announcement, LINE Yahoo noted that the feature utilizes OpenAI's API technology and explicitly stated that it does not guarantee the reliability, accuracy, completeness, or effectiveness of the AI-generated content.
According to the company, the new feature is part of Yahoo! News' ongoing efforts to integrate AI technology across its platform, enhancing user information experiences.
