Detroit, MI / Seoul, South Korea - General Motors Co. and Hyundai Motor Co. announced on Tuesday that they will co-develop five vehicles, set to launch in 2028, with projected annual sales exceeding 800,000 units once production is fully scaled.

The companies intend to develop four vehicles for the Central and South American markets: a compact SUV, a car, a pickup, and a mid-size pickup, each designed to use internal combustion or hybrid propulsion systems.

They also plan to co-develop an electric commercial van for the North American market.

GM is expected to lead the development of the mid-size truck platform.

Hyundai is expected to lead the development of compact vehicles and electric vans.

The companies will share common platforms and develop separate interiors and exteriors for their respective brands.

The electric commercial van is slated to be manufactured in the United States as early as 2028, according to the companies.

Design and engineering work are underway on the vehicles intended for the Central and South American markets, which are expected to launch in 2028.

"By partnering together, GM and Hyundai will bring more choice to our customers faster, and at lower cost," said Shilpan Amin, GM's senior vice president and global chief procurement and supply chain officer.
"This collaboration will help us continue to deliver value and choice to our customers across multiple vehicle segments and markets," said José Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.

The companies plan joint sourcing initiatives in North and South America for materials, transport, and logistics.

They have also agreed to explore collaboration on low-carbon emissions steel.

The announcement follows the signing of a framework agreement in September 2024.

The companies continue to evaluate additional joint vehicle development programs and collaboration opportunities involving propulsion systems, including internal combustion engines, hybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell technologies.
