SEOUL, South Korea — KT Corp (030200. KS) announced Monday that it has installed an automated weather station (AWS) at Wondong Wetland in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province.

The station will support environmental research by the National Institute of Ecology.

It is the first time KT has used its Internet of Things communication technology at a wetland site for biodiversity conservation.

The project follows an agreement signed by KT and the institute in August 2023 to monitor biological diversity as climate patterns shift.

The solar-powered station uses low-power communication technology for continuous monitoring.

It tracks and transmits real-time data on temperature, precipitation, and humidity.

The institute will use the data to analyze ecosystem changes and study wetland biodiversity, the company said.

The station will enable long-term monitoring of environmental data to support ecological preservation.

KT said it plans to expand its biodiversity efforts with the institute and the Yangsan city government.

Future work includes removing invasive species and improving habitats for protected species in the region.

The announcement coincided with World Wetlands Day, established in 1997 to mark the anniversary of the 1971 Ramsar Convention on wetland protection.
