Tokyo, JapanLINE Yahoo Corp announced the launch of "AI Friends," a service that enables users of its LINE messaging application to interact with artificially generated characters.

The service allows users to converse with AI characters that, according to the company, possess distinct personalities and can generate emotional responses.

LINE Yahoo said the characters can display emotions through facial expressions and voice features.

The company said the service includes characters modeled after historical figures, fictional idols, fairies, and animals.

According to LINE Yahoo, users may interact with these characters for purposes such as psychological tests and quizzes.

LINE Yahoo said access requires users to be at least 13 years old.

The company said users may conduct up to approximately 100 conversations daily across all characters, with the figure subject to change without notice.

The company said users may select from existing characters or generate custom characters using uploaded photographs.

LINE Yahoo said users may customize elements such as age, background, occupation, and speech characteristics.

The company stated that users may create up to four characters per day, with three available for potential public access and one for private use.

LINE Yahoo said characters submitted for public availability undergo company review. Approved characters become accessible to other users.

LINE Yahoo stated that the service uses interfaces from OpenAI, though the underlying technology may change.

The company said it previously introduced "LINE AI" and "LINE AI Talk Suggest" in April 2025.

The company described the service as part of its objective to incorporate AI agent functionality across its services.
