Seoul, South Korea - The Bank of Korea said Wednesday it has deployed a proprietary generative artificial intelligence platform for financial operations, which it described as the first such system by a central bank worldwide.

The system, named BOKI (Bank Of Korea Intelligence), became operational, the institutions said at a joint conference at the Bank of Korea's headquarters.

The AI platform operates on infrastructure isolated from external networks within the central bank's internal system, according to the announcement.

The closed-network architecture means all AI learning and inference processes occur within the secure environment.

Naver Cloud supplied cloud infrastructure and large language model technology for the project, while the Bank of Korea developed AI applications for financial and economic tasks using the foundation provided, the companies said.

Central bank staff can use the system for document search and summarization, question-and-answer functions, translation, economic analysis, and data-based decision support, according to the statement.

The organizations said they plan to continue training and refining the model using Bank of Korea data.

The announcement was made at an event attended by Naver board chairman Lee Hae-jin, Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon, Naver Cloud CEO Kim Yu-won, Bank of Korea Governor Rhee Chang-yong, and Ryu Je-myung, second vice minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT.

Kim Yu-won said the deployment represents "a globally leading case of applying AI technology to actual operations in the highest-level security environment required by a central bank."

Naver Cloud said it intends to expand public-sector AI implementation, focusing on central government ministries and major financial institutions where security and data management are critical.
