Samsung Galaxy XR Headset Launches on Android XR

Samsung releases Galaxy XR on Android XR platform with Google, Qualcomm. Features Micro-OLED display, Snapdragon XR2+ processor, 16GB memory.

Seoul, South Korea - Samsung Electronics released specifications for the Galaxy XR headset on Wednesday.

The device operates on Android XR, a platform developed with Google and Qualcomm Technologies.

The headset is the first product to use Android XR, which incorporates Google's Gemini artificial intelligence system. Samsung indicated plans to develop additional XR devices but did not provide further details.

The display measures 3,552 by 3,840 pixels with 6.3-micron pixel pitch. Color coverage is 95 percent DCI-P3. Refresh rates are 60Hz, 72Hz, or 90Hz.

The field of view is 109 degrees horizontal and 100 degrees vertical.

The device utilizes Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, paired with 16 gigabytes of memory and 256 gigabytes of storage.

The headset weighs 545 grams, and the external battery weighs 302 grams.

Battery duration is two hours for general use and 2.5 hours for video playback based on Samsung's testing.

The sensor array consists of two passthrough cameras, six tracking cameras, four eye-tracking cameras, five inertial measurement units, one depth sensor, and one flicker sensor.

The device uses iris recognition for authentication. Six microphones and two speakers are included.

Image capture uses an 18-millimeter F2.0 lens rated at 6.5 megapixels.

Video playback supports 8K resolution at 60 frames per second, with compatibility for HDR10 and HLG.

Android applications run on the device without modification. The platform conforms to OpenXR standards.

Google will provide versions of Maps, YouTube, and Photos for the platform.

Maps include navigation and a three-dimensional display. YouTube includes voice search. A passthrough mode displays physical surroundings. The device converts two-dimensional content to a three-dimensional format.

Samsung indicated it plans to use the device with Samsung Heavy Industries for training programs. 

The company is also developing enterprise applications with Qualcomm Technologies using Snapdragon Spaces.

Samsung has announced plans to develop glasses in collaboration with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster for the Android XR platform. No specifications were provided.

Interpupillary distance adjustment ranges from 54 to 70 millimeters. 

Vision correction requires separately purchased inserts. Connectivity is Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. The device operates while charging.

Availability is October 21 in the United States and October 22 in Korea. Pricing was not disclosed.
