Samsung, KT Test AI Network Tech on Commercial System

SEOUL, South Korea — Samsung Electronics and KT Corporation conducted a test of artificial intelligence-based radio access network optimisation technology on a commercial network in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, the companies said Monday.

The test involved about 18,000 users. The technology applies network configurations to individual devices based on wireless conditions rather than using uniform settings across all devices connected to a base station.

Samsung Research and KT's Future Network Laboratory performed the test following simulation-based work completed in June.

The system uses AI to analyse user movement and usage data.

The companies applied the technology to users who had experienced service disruptions and measured connection failure rates before and after implementation.

The companies said failures decreased among users with frequent disruptions and among other users in the area.

Standard network configurations apply the same settings to all devices connected to a base station.

The companies said that connections can weaken or be disrupted when users move through weak-signal areas or travel at high speeds.

JinGuk Jeong, executive vice president at Samsung Research, said the test demonstrated the potential of AI on commercial networks.

Jong-Sik Lee, executive vice president at KT's Future Network Laboratory, said the technology demonstrated potential AI applications for network operations.

The companies said they would expand testing to other commercial networks.

Samsung said it is researching AI-RAN technology for wireless networks and will work with operators worldwide.
