Tokyo, Japan - SoftBank Corp and Ericsson have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on next-generation telecommunications technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), cloud infrastructure, and sixth-generation (6G) mobile systems.

The partnership aims to evaluate and promote what the companies term "NextWave Tech" through 2030, focusing on technologies that could reshape cellular networks and their architecture.

Under the agreement, the companies will assess commercial readiness for AI-integrated cloud radio access networks (RAN) using service management and orchestration (SMO) and radio network applications (rApps).

The collaboration includes establishing network design strategies for extended reality (XR) applications, exploring new uses of radio waves through combined sensing and communication capabilities, and advancing centimeter wave technology to strengthen Japan's position in 6G development.

"This new partnership with SoftBank is a significant step towards maximizing the potential of technologies related to AI-powered cloud connectivity," said President Jawad Mansoor, Ericsson Japan.

SoftBank's Senior Executive Vice President and CTO Hideyuki Tsukuda said: "Our new partnership with Ericsson enables us to explore cutting-edge solutions that redefine network capabilities and customer experiences. Our joint efforts in areas such as 6G and AI will improve network performance and open paths to new business and technological breakthroughs."

The companies stated they would invest in realizing these new technologies to drive future business growth and improve cost efficiency across the telecommunications industry.

According to the statement, the partnership intends to address the needs of both consumer and enterprise customers seeking high-performance, secure, and reliable connectivity.
