Las Vegas, NV — Uber Technologies Inc. and Motional launched an autonomous ride-hailing service in Las Vegas on Friday, enabling users to book rides in all-electric IONIQ 5 robotaxis.

The service is available at designated locations along Las Vegas Boulevard, including Resorts World, Encore at Wynn, Westgate Resort & Casino, Downtown Las Vegas, and Town Square shopping district.

Motional, an autonomous vehicle technology company majority-owned by Hyundai Motor Group, supplies the SAE Level 4-capable vehicles.

The IONIQ 5 robotaxis are certified under U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Each vehicle currently operates with a human safety driver monitoring from the driver's seat. The companies anticipate transitioning to fully driverless operation by the end of 2026.

Uber users selecting UberX, Uber Electric, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric may be matched with a Motional robotaxi at no additional cost.

Riders receive a notification when matched and may decline the autonomous vehicle in favor of a standard ride.

Users may also opt in through app settings to increase the likelihood of being matched with a robotaxi.

Vehicle functions—including unlocking doors and initiating trips—are managed through the Uber application.

In-car audio prompts remind passengers to fasten seat belts, and human support is accessible via the app during the ride.

The service is part of a 10-year framework agreement between Uber and Motional, signed in 2022.

The agreement followed pilot programs, including a food delivery trial with Uber Eats in Los Angeles and a ride-hailing pilot in Las Vegas in late 2022.
