Seoul, South Korea – LG Uplus (032640. KS) has reported a data breach affecting 180,000 customers.

As indicated on the company's website, the leaked information comprises names, dates of birth, and telephone numbers but not financial data.

The breach was identified on January 2, prompting LG Uplus to request the assistance of the police cyber investigation team and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) in the investigation.

LG Uplus, the third-largest telecommunications provider in South Korea, has implemented a system on its website that lets customers ascertain whether their data has been compromised.

The company plans to notify affected individuals via SMS or email.

The precise cause of the data leak remains undetermined.

An LG Uplus employee indicated that the week-long interval between the discovery and public announcement was necessary to verify ambiguous data and identify affected customers.

This incident illustrates the ongoing concerns regarding data security within the telecommunications sector.

The investigation into the breach is still in progress.
