Seoul, South Korea - HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180. KS), a unit of HD Hyundai Group, has developed the world's first zero-carbon ammonia dual-fuel engine using a high-pressure direct injection method.

The HiMSEN Ammonia Dual-Fuel Engine (model H22CDF-LA) completed model-based class approval testing at the Engine Technology Center in Ulsan, South Korea.

Representatives from seven international classification societies, including ABS (USA), DNV (Norway), and LR (UK), attended the testing.

The engine is designed for ammonia carriers, marine power generation, and propulsion.

HD Hyundai also plans to supply the engine to land-based power generation markets.

Unlike previous ammonia engines that used a low-pressure premixed combustion method, HD Hyundai's engine employs a high-pressure direct injection method.

This approach offers improved output and fuel efficiency while reducing greenhouse gas emissions such as nitrogen dioxide (N2O).

The company optimized fuel spraying timing and duration to maximize burning rates.

It also developed a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to minimize nitrogen oxide and unburned ammonia emissions.

HD Hyundai incorporated an Integrated Scrubber system, developed independently by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, to significantly reduce ammonia concentrations.

"The development of this ammonia engine has great meaning as it will be an opportunity for us to lead the market while providing an expanded eco-friendly dual-fuel engine lineup," said a company official.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries aims to commercialize the HiMSEN ammonia engine after completing the detailed examinations and compliance reviews associated with the model-based class approval.
