Sony Launches Level 4 Autonomous MR Cruise Service in Eiheiji Town

FUKUI, Japan—Sony Group Corporation announced the second phase deployment of its MR Cruise mixed reality service in Eiheiji Town, Fukui Prefecture. 

The service integrates the technology with Level 4 autonomous vehicles.

The service, developed using technology from Sony's Sociable Cart SC-1 platform, will allow passengers to experience local history and culture through real-time exterior views and computer-generated content displayed inside the vehicle.

The SC-1, jointly developed by Sony Group Corporation and Yamaha Motor Corporation, has transported over 20,000 passengers without incidents since its introduction. 

The vehicle features a 4K LCD monitor instead of the windshield, displaying images captured by high-sensitivity front-mounted cameras enhanced with mixed reality elements.

Sony reports that the SC-1 platform has been deployed across Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa, serving various functions, including event operations, facility tours, unmanned patrols, and information services. 

The vehicle has demonstrated capabilities in challenging conditions, including navigation on snowy roads.

Beginning in 2024, Sony plans to expand its MR technology integration beyond the SC-1 platform to include other transportation systems such as taxis, buses, and monorails. 

This expansion aims to enhance passenger experiences across multiple modes of public transportation.

The company positions this development as part of its broader strategy to advance smart city initiatives and optimize future urban transportation systems through mixed reality technology integration.
