Yahoo! Japan Introduces Otoku Designated Delivery Service to Ease Shipping Workloads

Yahoo! Japan announced the launch of Otoku Designated Delivery, a service that allows users to select convenient delivery dates and earn PayPay points based on those dates.

The service aims to ease the shipping burden and decentralize the delivery process, benefiting users, stores, and delivery companies.

During a trial period, demand for the service was higher than expected, with 51% of users participating.

More than half of the stores surveyed expressed interest in using the service due to tight shipping workloads.

As a result, Yahoo! Japan decided to expand the service to all stores on its platform.

Typically, 80% of orders placed through Yahoo! Shopping do not have a specific delivery date, with items typically shipped on the earliest possible date determined by each store.

The Otoku Designated Delivery service, which allows users to earn PayPay points by selecting a later delivery date, is expected to reduce shipping and delivery workloads during peak periods.

Participating stores can set their delivery date flexibility, offering points worth 1-100 yen for delivery dates up to 14 days later than the minimum required.

The launch comes amid growing concerns about the “2024 logistics problem,” which stems from overtime regulations for truck drivers set to take effect in April 2024.

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is working with parcel delivery, e-commerce, and mail-order companies to promote efforts to reduce re-delivery.

The new service aims to improve efficiency, ensure stable logistics, and reduce CO2 emissions by lowering re-deliveries.
