Samsung Electronics and Vodafone have announced plans to expand their 5G Open RAN network across Europe.

The focus will be launching new open network initiatives in Spain and Germany and enhancing Vodafone’s 5G network in the UK.

The announcement follows Vodafone UK’s successful deployment of Samsung’s virtualized RAN (vRAN) solution in Bath in January 2022.

The two companies also achieved high performance and power savings at Vodafone UK’s strategic Open RAN sites in Exmouth and Torquay, England.

Samsung’s 64T64R Massive MIMO radios were integrated into Vodafone UK’s 5G vRAN.

The companies completed a data call using Samsung’s vRAN and NEC’s Massive MIMO radio, demonstrating the interoperability of Open RAN technology.

Vodafone will pilot Open RAN in Germany using Samsung’s 2G/4G vRAN and O-RAN-compliant radio solutions.

At the same time, Samsung will deploy its Massive MIMO radios and 4G/5G vRAN at CREATE, Vodafone’s testbed in Ciudad Real, Spain.

Thomas Riedel, Head of Samsung Networks Europe, praised Vodafone’s commitment to Open RAN innovation and expressed Samsung’s excitement to deepen its cooperation with Vodafone in Europe.

Both companies continue to work with other Open RAN leaders to advance Open RAN with a multi-vendor and open architecture.
