Rakuten Group Reaches Carbon Neutrality Goal for 2023

Tokyo, Japan—Rakuten Group, Inc. has announced that it has achieved carbon neutrality for its entire business activities in fiscal year 2023, including its consolidated subsidiaries.

The company has effectively zeroed its greenhouse gas emissions through a combination of energy efficiency improvements, the introduction and expanded use of renewable energy, and the purchase of carbon offsets.

In commemoration of this achievement, Rakuten has launched a special website, "Rakuten Green Empowerment," which showcases the company's efforts to improve energy efficiency and opportunities for consumers to reduce environmental impact through the use of Rakuten's services.

Since September 2022, Rakuten has been implementing various measures across its group of companies to achieve carbon neutrality.

These include introducing regulations governing the operation of air conditioning systems, setting temperature parameters in offices, and enhancing cooling efficiency in data centers.

Moreover, the company has expanded its use of renewable energy sources, with some subsidiaries and overseas offices utilizing 100% renewable energy-derived power.

Solar power generation facilities have been installed at select Rakuten logistics and offices.

Rakuten is pursuing certification from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in anticipation of its future environmental initiatives.

The company has applied for target certification, including Scope 3 emission reductions.
