Seoul, South Korea - Samsung Electronics has launched a high-capacity 8TB T5 EVO portable solid-state drive (SSD) model.

This is the largest storage capacity currently available in a portable SSD.

Why it matters:

The new 8TB capacity addresses the growing consumer demand for high-capacity portable external storage to accommodate increasing file sizes.

SSD technology enables higher performance and more compact form factors than traditional mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs).

The Key Points

  • The T5 EVO SSD delivers sequential read/write speeds of up to 460MB/sec, potentially 3.8 times faster than external HDDs.
  • The compact, rugged design measures 95mm x 40mm x 17mm and weighs 102 grams with a drop resistance of up to 2 meters.
  • Security features include thermal throttling technology and 256-bit AES hardware encryption.
  • It has broad operating system and device compatibility, including Windows, MacOS, Android, and game consoles.

What They Say:

"The T5 EVO is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of consumers with different lifestyles," said Samsung's Hangu Sohn.

What Comes Next:

The T5 EVO SSD is available in 2TB ($189.99), 4TB ($349.99), and 8TB ($649.99) models.

Competitors may respond with similar capacity increases for their portable SSD product lines.

Continued SSD technology innovation will likely lead to further advances in portable storage capacity, performance, and form factors.
