Tokyo, Japan  - U.S. venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, known as a16z, plans to open its first international office in Japan this summer, co-founder Ben Horowitz announced Thursday during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The firm, which made early investments in technology companies including Facebook and Instagram, said it plans to expand investment operations and entrepreneur development programs in Japan.

The announcement came alongside the Takai Cabinet's "Japan Growth Strategy," an economic policy aimed at building a domestic startup ecosystem under a "Technological Nation" initiative.

The Japanese government has designated the defense industry as one of 17 strategic fields, under a stated policy that economic and technological capabilities directly correlate with national diplomatic and defense strength.

Government representatives said a16z's entry into the Japanese market is expected to support domestic efforts to establish economic autonomy and technological superiority.

The administration said integrating foreign startup investment aligns with its broader objective of creating a cycle between national security and economic growth
