Seoul, South Korea—LG Energy Solution and General Motors announced today a definitive agreement to jointly develop prismatic battery cell technology and affiliated chemistries for GM's future electric vehicles.

The agreement expands upon the companies' 14-year battery technology partnership and positions LG Energy Solution to become the first global battery manufacturer offering all three form factors: pouch-type, cylindrical, and prismatic cells.

The collaboration builds on the companies' existing Ultium Cells joint venture, which has created thousands of jobs through its battery manufacturing plants in Ohio and Tennessee.

LG Energy Solution plans to leverage its experience in prismatic cell production, backed by its existing patent portfolio covering battery design and manufacturing technologies.

The company will focus on stacking technology, reflecting an industry shift from winding to stacking in prismatic cell structures.

The prismatic cells feature a flat, rectangular shape with a rigid enclosure.

They are designed to allow for space-efficient packaging within battery modules and packs.

GM will implement this technology in its future electric vehicle lineup.

"We've built Ultium Cells into one of the largest battery cell manufacturers in North America," said Kurt Kelty, GM vice president of battery cell and pack

"We're focused on optimizing our battery technology by developing the right battery chemistries and form factors to improve EV performance, enhance safety, and reduce costs."

Wonjoon Suh, Executive Vice President and head of LG Energy Solution's Advanced Automotive Battery division emphasized the company's commitment to expanding its relationship with GM, noting their previous achievements in the partnership.

Through this expanded product portfolio, the companies aim to support global mass electric vehicle adoption by offering power solutions tailored to different electric vehicle segments.
