Seoul, South Korea - Hanwha Aerospace and SK Enmove have jointly developed the world's first "non-flammable" Energy Storage System (ESS) for marine applications, the companies announced on Tuesday.

The new liquid immersion cooling ESS technology prevents fire spread between battery cells and blocks external contaminants like salt and dust, addressing key safety concerns in marine environments.

The companies said they have completed technology development and are currently conducting demonstrations.

Their main model, SEAL, has obtained certifications from the DNV and Korea Register.

Hanwha Aerospace aims to enter the green ship ESS market, which is projected to reach 10 trillion won by 2030, leveraging its 20-year R&D experience in ESS safety.

SK Enmove plans to expand its cooling fluid technology application to data centers and electric vehicles, areas vulnerable to fire risks.

According to market research firm MarketsandMarkets, the global marine ESS market is expected to grow from about US$2.1 billion in 2021 to US$7.6 billion in 2030.
