Tokyo, Japan—Hitachi Rail, a global transportation company, announced on Wednesday that it is integrating NVIDIA AI technology to improve rail operations and maintenance.

The rail systems provider is incorporating NVIDIA's IGX platform into its new HMAX platform to process sensor and camera data in real-time.

This integration reduces maintenance costs, decreases train idling time, and enhances transit reliability.

Hitachi Rail estimates proactive maintenance costs about seven times less than emergency repairs.

Its existing AI monitoring systems have already reduced service delays by up to 20% and train maintenance costs by up to 15% while cutting energy consumption at train depots by up to 40%.

The company plans to increase these savings with real-time analysis using NVIDIA IGX and the NVIDIA Holoscan platform for sensor processing.

Koji Agatsuma, executive director and chief technology officer of rail vehicles at Hitachi Rail, said the new system would enable them to avoid service disruptions and significantly improve safety, reliability, and operating costs.

The HMAX platform, powered by NVIDIA IGX and the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software platform, will process data from sensors onboard trains, existing systems, and third-party software.

In the UK, each Hitachi Rail train reports nearly 50,000 data points as frequently as every fifth of a second.

Hitachi Rail anticipates that the immediate alerts on thousands of miles of railway will reduce delays and disruptions to passenger travel.

The company is also exploring the use of train-mounted cameras to monitor overhead power lines, identify degrading electric cables, and prevent disruptive failures.

The new AI-powered applications will be available soon through the HMAX platform for Hitachi Rail's international customer base.
