KT Corp, Microsoft ink $1 bln AI deal to boost South Korean business

Seoul, South Korea / Redmond, WA—South Korea's KT Corp. (030200.KS) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) have announced a five-year, multibillion-dollar partnership to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) innovation among Korean businesses and consumers.

The deal, unveiled on Sunday in South Korean local time, focuses on developing customized AI solutions for the South Korean market, delivering sovereign cloud services, and establishing a new AI transformation (AX) specialized service company.

KT plans to use Microsoft's AI technologies, including OpenAI's GPT-4 and Microsoft's Phi language models, to create tailored AI solutions for over 650,000 businesses and 17 million consumers in South Korea.

To address data sovereignty concerns, the companies will collaborate on a South Korean sovereign cloud solution based on Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty, aimed at public sector and regulated industry customers.

KT will launch a new AX-specialized service company to accelerate AI adoption among South Korean businesses, with Microsoft providing consulting resources over three years.

The partnership includes a joint R&D initiatives, with plans for a co-innovation center and collaboration with Microsoft Research on areas such as network modernization and AI for healthcare.

KT will migrate its IT infrastructure to Microsoft Azure and deploy Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot across its workforce. 

Microsoft will help upskill over 19,000 KT employees in cloud and AI technologies.

Recently, KT's competitor SK Telecom announced its AI alliance with Perplexity.AI.
