KT Proves Open RAN Power-Saving Tech, Boosts Collaboration

Source: KT

Seoul, South Korea - KT Corp (NYSE: KT) has announced the successful validation of a technology that reduces power consumption in an Open Radio Access Network (RAN) environment using a RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC).

The test employed equipment from multiple manufacturers for the Open RAN.

The validation was conducted at the 5G Testbed Center in Pangyo, operated by the National Information Society Agency (NIA).

KT collaborated with Intel, Dell Technologies, CapGemini, and the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) to set up and integrate virtualized base stations with the RIC.

The test results indicated a 16% reduction in base station power consumption compared to conventional methods.

The company exhibited this technology at the "O-RAN Alliance Plugfest Spring 2024," where it served as a leading participant.

KT has been expanding the Open RAN equipment ecosystem, including its role as a joint operator of the "Korea OTIC," an internationally accredited Open RAN testing center in South Korea.

KT intends to expand the base station software manufacturer ecosystem and enhance collaboration with pertinent organizations.

KT will collaborate with TTA to introduce a certified RIC testing and certification procedure.
