Seoul, South Korea / Tokyo, Japan - Samsung Electronics and NTT DOCOMO have joined forces to research artificial intelligence applications in next-generation mobile communications technology.

The collaboration began in August and aims to accelerate AI research in communications as the industry moves towards 6G standardization.

The partnership will focus on improving network quality and establishing a foundation for the transition to 6G.

The joint research is expected to enhance user service quality and network operational efficiency for service providers.

The companies plan to develop AI technology that enables user-level optimization of communication quality, a step beyond current cell site-level optimization.

Takaaki Sato, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at NTT DOCOMO, said the cooperation would accelerate AI-powered innovation in the telecom industry and help realize the vision for future communications such as 6G.

Paul Cheun, President and Chief Technology Officer at Samsung Electronics, stated that the joint research would play an integral role in developing AI technology for communication systems.

Samsung and NTT DOCOMO have previously collaborated on mobile communication technology standardization within the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

They intend to use this new research partnership to deepen their cooperation in advancing future communication technologies.
