SEOUL, South Korea/MUNICH, Germany - Samsung Electronics and O2 Telefónica have inaugurated their inaugural commercial site for virtualized RAN (vRAN) and Open RAN in Landsberg am Lech, Bavaria, Germany.

The site, which represents the inaugural deployment of Samsung's 5G vRAN solution in a commercial network in Germany, provides 4G and 5G services to customers.

The companies have announced plans to expand the vRAN and Open RAN network to seven additional sites in the region in the coming months.

The launch occurred subsequent to the joint initiative of the companies, which was announced in October 2023, to develop a roadmap for testing vRAN and Open RAN technologies.

O2 Telefónica's objective is to construct a more efficient and future-proof network through the utilisation of contemporary RAN technologies, open interfaces, and automation capabilities.

Samsung's initial deployment offering includes its 4G and 5G vRAN 3.0 solution and O-RAN compliant radios supporting various frequency bands.

Moreover, the companies intend to introduce Samsung's intelligent network automation solutions for life cycle management.
