Samsung Electronics (KRX: 005930) announced that it had acquired standardized 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) modem technology.

The technology will enable smartphones to connect directly to satellites in remote areas.

The company plans to integrate this technology into its Exynos modem solutions, enabling 5G satellite communications commercialization and preparing for the 6G-driven Internet of Everything (IoE) era.

The new non-terrestrial network technology uses satellites and other non-terrestrial vehicles to connect regions previously inaccessible to terrestrial networks.

Samsung’s NTN technology complies with the latest 5G standards defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP Release 17).

This ensures interoperability and scalability among global telecom operators, mobile device manufacturers, and chip companies.

The technology will be critical for disaster area operability and future urban air mobility, including unmanned aircraft and flying cars.

Samsung also plans to secure standardized NB-IoT NTN technology for its next-generation modem platforms.
