Seoul Launches Water Bus Service in Transportation Innovation Push

Seoul, South Korea - The Seoul Metropolitan Government unveiled its first two water buses, marking a significant expansion of the city's public transportation system to include waterway services on the Han River.

The vessels, built by Eunsung Heavy Industries in Sacheon, South Korea, feature a hybrid propulsion system with 95% domestically produced components and multiple safety features, including a four-layer protection system against battery fires.

Each catamaran-style vessel is designed with panoramic windows and includes facilities such as an onboard cafeteria, bicycle racks, and wheelchair-accessible spaces. 

The boats are built with a low profile to pass under the Jamsu Bridge while minimizing wake impact.

"The era of water transportation in Han River is finally beginning," Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said at the launching ceremony. "This will provide citizens with new public transportation options and offer tourists a unique way to experience Seoul."

The city plans to conduct maritime trials and safety certifications through the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority before delivering the vessels to Seoul in December. 

Six additional vessels and four reserve boats are scheduled for construction and progressive deployment. 

Before beginning regular operations, the city will implement a phased testing program that includes equipment verification, crew training, and emergency response drills.

The water buses are part of Seoul's broader initiative to enhance public transportation options and develop the Han River as a major urban feature.
