Tokyo, Japan / Singapore—Sony Research and AI Singapore (AISG) signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly research large language models for Southeast Asian languages, the companies said on Tuesday.

The collaboration will initially focus on exploring SEA-LION (Southeast Asian Languages In One Network) for the Tamil language, which an estimated 60-85 million people worldwide speak.

Sony Research and AISG aim to test and provide feedback on the SEA-LION model, particularly for Tamil and other Southeast Asian languages.

They will also share best practices on large language model development and research methodologies.

The partnership leverages Sony Research's presence in India and its expertise in language model development for Indian languages, including Tamil.

Hiroaki Kitano, President of Sony Research, said the collaboration aims to address the gap in Southeast Asian representation in the global large language model landscape.

Leslie Teo, Senior Director of AI Products at AI Singapore, stated the partnership could boost the performance of new solutions and drive innovation in multilingual AI technologies.

The companies did not disclose specific timelines or financial details of the collaboration.
