Atsugi, Japan—Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) announced on Wednesday that it will release a new OLED microdisplay for augmented reality (AR) glasses, featuring the industry's smallest pixels and highest brightness.

The ECX350F, a 0.44-type Full HD OLED microdisplay, combines 5.1 µm pixels with a peak brightness of 10,000 cd/m2, approximately double that of the company's conventional model.

SSS said the new product addresses the challenge of delivering high brightness with small pixels, a longstanding issue in AR display technology.

The microdisplay's compact design, with a short-side size of 7.99 mm, represents a 24% reduction from the previous model. This miniaturization aims to enable thinner and lighter AR glasses.

The ECX350F also features a variable black frame function, allowing it to display video input of any resolution below Full HD at any position within the device's active display area.

SSS plans to begin shipping samples in October 2024. The sample price is JPY 40,000 (US$278.99), excluding tax.

The company is committed to enhancing the AR user experience by supporting high-resolution, precise imaging in compact devices.
