Amid the global AI boom, South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT has announced plans to allocate KRW 3,901 billion in 2023 to enhance the competitiveness of super-scale AI and promote it as a key future industry.

This decision comes after successfully deploying AI models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Meta’s LLAMA.

The government emphasizes expanding technological and industrial infrastructure to facilitate private sector progress in super-scale AI.

Key elements of this strategy include increasing the availability of high-quality text data, advancing core technologies to address current AI limitations, and providing large-scale computing resources.

To create a thriving industrial innovation ecosystem for super-scale AI, the government intends to promote the use of AI in both the private and public sectors while fostering an AI-centric digital industry.

As part of this initiative, a “Super AI Council” will strengthen collaboration between private sector investment and developing new services.

The government also aims to train AI specialists and improve the public’s understanding of super AI.

The Personal Information Protection Commission released the “Plan to Secure Public Trust for Data Innovation,” emphasizing that public trust is essential to successfully implementing a digital platform government and entering the era of super AI.

The plan includes promoting personal information management that focuses on individuals and establishing protection principles and data processing standards to address public concerns in the era of super AI.

In addition, the government aims to revamp the public sector’s personal information management and control systems, leaving no area untouched.

This includes strengthening the management and supervision of personal information processing systems in the public sector that handle large amounts of sensitive personal data.

With these comprehensive plans, the South Korean government is poised to advance the development and application of large-scale AI, enhancing the country’s global competitiveness and stimulating innovation in the technology and business sectors.
