South Korea Unveils KRW145.5 Billion Jeju Development Plan

JEJU, South Korea- South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced development plans for Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on Tuesday, outlining investments across multiple sectors.

Key figures from the announcement:

  • Green hydrogen projects: KRW56 billion (US$41.0 million) by 2026
  • Lava seawater product development: KRW22.4 billion (US$16.4 million) by 2025
  • Resource recycling cluster: KRW41.3 billion (US$30.2 million) by 2028
  • Smart logistics center: KRW25.8 billion (US$18.9 million) by 2026

The plans aim to develop Jeju's tourism, clean energy, and local infrastructure.

Tourism initiatives include:

  • Designation as Urban Air Mobility (UAM) pilot operation zone
  • Support for UNESCO-listed haenyeo (female diver) culture preservation
  • Construction of the National Tamra Cultural Heritage Research Center

Energy sector plans:

  • Development of distributed energy specialized zones
  • Clean hydrogen production facility installation under consideration

Infrastructure improvements:

  • Jeju New Port construction cooperation
  • Second airport construction collaboration
  • Expansion of Jeju University Hospital and Seogwipo Medical Center
  • Sewage treatment plant expansion and aging sewage pipe maintenance in 2025

The discussion, attended by approximately 80 stakeholders, addressed Jeju's medical infrastructure needs, noting the absence of tertiary hospitals and low physician numbers.

Government representatives included the Presidential Committee for Local Development Chairman and the Minister of Health and Welfare.
