Netflix has launched Season 2 of Squid Game. The new season consists of seven episodes.

For your information, Squid Game is also a representative success story of a non-English-speaking series that has prompted Netflix to expand its global portfolio more aggressively.

Lee Jung-jae returns as Gi-hun (Player 456), but director Hwang Dong-hyuk has reimagined the character's arc.

“In season 1, there was a part where Ki-hoon's various personalities were slightly revealed,” Hwang says. “This time, we're focusing on his determination.”

The mood darkened as Ki-hoon gave up his plan to confront the dark organization behind the game.

The stakes are still high as the participants compete for KRW 45.6 billion (US$31 million). This is the same amount as the prize money in Season 1.

The production introduces several new players, including Yim Si-wan as Myung-gi (Player 333) and Kang Ha-neul as Dae-ho (Player 388), while maintaining continuity through returning characters like the enigmatic Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun).

Director Hwang, the first Asian to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series at the 74th Emmy Awards, maintained his unique perspective in this work, which seems to have expanded in scope.

In addition, the work of production designer Kyung-sun Chae continues to show a balanced aesthetic within the familiarity of “Squid Game.”

Of course, they acknowledged the pressure of the first season's massive success. However, they wanted to use that pressure to bring even more enjoyment to Netflix viewers worldwide.

Netflix has launched an official podcast hosted by Phil Yu and Keira Plizgaw to tell the story behind the story. This podcast will unravel each episode's moral dilemmas and narratives to help viewers understand the work more deeply.

Currently, opinions in various media are divided between praise and criticism. The new season of Squid Game has been nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series.
