Seoul, South Korea—Samsung Electronics (005930: KS) announced on Thursday that it has agreed to acquire Oxford Semantic Technologies, a UK-based startup specializing in knowledge graph technology.

The acquisition aims to enhance Samsung's artificial intelligence capabilities, particularly in delivering personalized user experiences across its product range.

Oxford Semantic Technologies, founded in 2017 by three Oxford University professors, has developed RDFox, an AI-centric engine for knowledge representation and semantic reasoning.

Samsung and Oxford Semantic Technologies have collaborated since 2018 with Samsung Ventures, which previously invested in the startup.

The South Korean tech giant plans to integrate Oxford Semantic Technologies' advanced core engines for personal knowledge graphs with its on-device AI technology, such as that used in the Galaxy S24 series.

Samsung said this combination will enable hyper-personalized user experiences while maintaining device data security.

The technology will be applied to Samsung's entire product line, including televisions, home appliances, and mobile devices.

Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, Head of Samsung Research and CTO of Samsung Electronics, stated that the acquisition would boost the company's capabilities in knowledge engineering.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
