Naver CEO Champions Korea's AI Leadership at Jeju Forum

JEJU, South Korea - Naver Corp (035420. KS) CEO Choi Soo-yeon touted South Korea's competitive advantage in artificial intelligence (AI) during a panel discussion at the Jeju Forum, an event organized by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Speaking alongside SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and KAIST AI Graduate School Dean Jung Song, Choi emphasized Naver's contributions to the country's AI ecosystem, including its 'HyperCLOVA X' technology and chip-based innovations. 

She positioned South Korea as one of the few nations with a comprehensive AI industry ecosystem and urged increased collaboration between companies to secure AI leadership in Asia.

"South Korea is recognized globally as an AI leader, possessing an excellent AI industry ecosystem and independent digital platforms," Choi stated during the discussion.

Choi highlighted Naver's achievements in the field, noting that the company was the first private entity in South Korea to introduce a supercomputer and construct a hyperscale data center named 'Gak Sejong.' 

She also emphasized that, outside of China, South Korea is virtually the only Asian country to have developed a large-scale generative AI model "from scratch" in its native language.

Looking ahead, Naver plans to expand its global partnerships to promote what Choi termed "sovereign AI," which aims to reflect regional cultures and values in AI development.

The Jeju Forum attracted approximately 500 attendees and yielded no major unexpected announcements. 

However, it underscored the growing emphasis on AI sovereignty and regional technology leadership in Asia.
